Seem like a stretch to make this comparison? Not really. Let me explain. Recently I decided it was high time for me to get out, enjoy the beautiful weather and get a bit of exercise. I have always envied bicyclists gliding along with the wind in their hair and sun on their faces going somewhere, anywhere they chose to point their bike and pedal. After many years of a hiatus (as in high school on a ten speed), I made the all important decision to ride a bike. The decision was one thing, actually doing it was quite another.
I spent the next couple of weeks googling the best bikes, most comfortable bikes, easiest bikes, bikes for roads and bikes for paths, bikes for people who haven’t biked in years and cool bikes. The choices were overwhelming. I went to some discount and warehouse stores to look at bikes hanging on the walls. Not much help there. Finally, I realized if I was going to get on two wheels I needed help, a lot of help. I decided no more second hand information for me, I was going to go to the experts.
California Bicycle is a locally owned shop with a world of resources for everyone from the novice (like me) to the experienced rider. I must admit that I was a little intimidated at first walking in the store. What if I was the only one in the world who had no idea how to pick a bike? What if I couldn’t ride anymore? All of my concerns were quickly assuaged by the amazing, down to earth and supportive staff. They suggested several different bike styles, sent me down the street for test drives, carefully disguised their laughter when my foot caught in a pedal cage and I almost wiped out, they told me all about the paths to ride in La Jolla, and gently talked me through the process of investing in a quality bike that would last for the long term and meet all of my needs. I visited the store a couple of times prior to making my final (and perfect) choice…a royal blue Electra Townie, if you must know…and when I finally did I felt invigorated and excited to ride. The support I received every step of the way from the staff made me feel confident and prepared to get back on a bike and ride.
Coaching is just like riding a bike. Sure you can go at life on your own. But wouldn’t it be so much easier, more motivating and a lot more supportive to have a guide to show you options, let you try them out while watching from a distance in case you fall, point out a path and send you out on your way? Who knows, after a few meetings with a coach you’ll discover a new direction you want to take and you too could be pedaling toward an exciting destination with the wind in your hair and sun on your face. Imagine all of the bystanders who will envy and perhaps even follow suit.
Next on your list may be surfing…I know this great surf shop in the Shores.
