In honor of the tenth anniversary of September 11, @lajollacoaching is launching a twitter campaign to give followers 365 days of life enhancing ideas. Not every idea will fit all, some will be very serious and others not so much, ideas will be original, borrowed and even suggested. Why take on this task? It is about changing your perspective. And sometimes one idea is all that it takes. And when you change your perspective the world around you will react. There is a connectedness to our world from a small scale to the most global reaches.
Today I was heading for the check out line at the market with a cart full of groceries when I noticed a woman walking towards me. Knowing that I was getting on queue for the shortest one, but had more items than she did, I motioned for her go before me. Did I alter the course of life as we know it? Certainly not. However the woman smiled at me when I first suggested she go ahead and, after she was finished checking out, she thanked me again. It made us both feel better about that moment. A simple moment in the grocery store. Is it possible that this woman will never do a nice act for someone else? I suppose, but it is unlikely. I prefer to imagine that she pulled into traffic a little happier because of our simple interaction, perhaps letting another car merge ahead of her and thus continuing the positive energy. It is all connected.
What does this have to do with 9/11? Well, frankly, everything. September 11 altered the world in ways that are still inconceivable but one of things that almost immediately happened was people re-examined their values, their priorities, the way they treated themselves and others. Almost every phone call that was made on that morning to loved ones included the words “I love you.” How profound is that? It wasn’t about the garbage not being taken out or the dog needing to be walked or the disagreement about where to go on vacation. Life was boiled down to three simple words, “I love you.”
I can tell you where I was when I heard about the first plane hitting the World Trade Center as I am fairly sure you can do as well. I never imagined a day so infinitely etched in my memory. I also never imagined a day like that happening. The word that always comes to mind about that day is incomprehensible. And it shifted our world, it changed how we interact with each other but sometimes we need to be gently reminded. Life goes back to routines and people get busy. Sometimes we need a daily reminder to live purposefully. To never forget our values and priorities. It is my hope that it doesn’t take a tragic day like 9/11 to be a catalyst to change. I hope that it can be a simple act such as letting someone on line ahead of you. That is the motivation behind the 365 days of ideas.
Idea #1. Say I love you.
